Sometimes I come across some information related to depression while reading my emails, reading magazines and newspapers or just surfing the world wide web. I am always interested in knowing more about new possible causes and treatments for depression. Here is an update of a few things that caught my eye.

Hypothyroidism

I read about the symptoms of having too low levels of thyroid hormones in your body. These symptoms include feeling tired, depressed and having problems with thinking clearly. Hypothyroidism is most commonly caused when the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid tissue and damages it. Other causes may include viral infections, lithium and radiation therapy.

Nutrition

You are what you eat, right? Well, here is some insights into how a lack of good nutrition may be causing long term depression in people. The following deficiencies in your daily diet should be investigated:

* Low amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

* Low amount of antioxidants.

* Low amount of vitamin B-12

Discuss your diet with your doctor or a nutritional specialist and see whether you are getting enough of these vital nutrients.

On a metaphysical and mental level, I have read about how important it is to learn optimism. I can be very pessimistic at times, so I may be looking into this important thinking style in the future.

Pessimists are much more vulnerable to developing depression than optimists because they view failures and problems as being complete and lasting a long time.

Optimists believe that failures and problems are temporary, therefore they do not give up on trying to live a meaningful life and are more immune to depression.

Worth looking at.
